MIP 2010: FISANTEKRAAL CRECHE Summery The proposed site of crèche is located in fisaantekraal in durbanville.next to the site is and an existing church building that must that is considered as part of the overall urban plan. The site is surrounded by formal settlement on the south, informal on the eastern and western and a high way to the north. The site is open to the bishop court close street on the south And new footpaths are created around the site to connect with the existing foot path to a taxi rank on the main road, to allow movement from the community through the site to the taxi rank Functions: The crèche provides spaces for three class rooms with an odd assortment of windows of different shapes and sizes vaguely imitating a funny child’s smiling face. The low horizontal windows at the bottom are designed for toddlers and waddlers to look through either to the outside world or to the oncoming parent. From my precedent study inculcated the use of walls as functional element so I decided to cut into the walls for storage purposes and provide spots for standing and sitting, holes in wall to allow children to crawl through these holes also serve as windows to the play ground. The crèche also provides spaces for an indoor play ground with interesting and fun maximum natural light penetration through the odd assortment of windows of different shapes and sizes on the wall and the roof. It houses a kitchen, a staff ablution, a sick bay and the reception area. This arrangement separates the served areas form the servant areas. There is also an outdoor area that has magnificent views to the table mountain the indoor pal is separated from the outdoor by a glass timber door deliberate to make the building as bright and friendly as possible The design also considers the street edge by creating seating areas at the back of the block that houses the kitchen toilets sick bay etc which will hide or cover up the services of these spaces for example pipes .ect.
The new crèche principle of ‘learning by fun’ has been significantly enhanced by the buildings special arrangement, openness and relation to playground and outside areas. Different age groups mix in door play Room and develop social, creative and imaginary skills. The use of load bearing walls for external and gypsum board for internal purposes..
